The Avowed 1.4 update is now live on all platforms, and it fixes a feature that had frustrated me and many gamers alike, and it couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

The new patch has been launched along with the roadmap for the upcoming months, and a lot of new content is planned down the road. As much as that stuff excites me (more on that later), version 1.4 has fixed the way the fog of war used to work previously in the game. This is arguably the best piece of fix that Obsidian could have possibly included as part of any patch, and I am glad that the problem has been sorted out quite early.

Avowed’s fog of war will no longer frustrate players post 1.4 update

Version 1.4 includes plenty of changes that are now live, and here’s a small sentence from the patch notes.

  • Once most of a map’s accessible areas are explored, the fog of war will fully clear.

In simple words, the fog of war will completely disappear if you have explored all the accessible areas of the map. The earlier system was severely painful, as Avowed‘s map has always had inaccessible areas (they’re still there, but they will no longer cause an issue in this regard).

The fog of war used to remain over the inaccessible areas, irrespective of whether you visited the accessible areas. This was a major problem, as highlighted in this Reddit thread. While the map would show smaller regions of interest, it wouldn’t reveal the path (which was completely blocked by different stuff like walls, cliffs, or something else).

I have often spent several minutes, if not more, trying to reach these areas, without realizing that there’s no way to reach them. I would have known that in the first place had the fog of war never remained over the inaccessible areas (and completely hiding them in the process).

While the fog of war changes have been all excited about jumping into the game, there’s plenty in store. The roadmap is divided into three parts – Spring, Summer, and Fall. The contents for the Spring 2025 update are already live.

Spring 2025

  • Arachnophobia Safe Mode
  • Mouse and Keyboard support for Xbox
  • Fog of War Improvements
  • More Gold and Crafting materials
  • Soul Pods will now dispel illusions
  • Unique gear improvements

Summer 2025

  • Cooking and Crafting improvements
  • New NPC abilities and behaviors
  • New active and passive abilities
  • New, unique weapons and armor
  • Custom Map makers

Fall 2025

  • New Game Plus
  • Photo mode
  • New weapon type
  • Changing appearances in the world
  • New character presets
  • More Godlike feature presets

If you have noticed the features listed here, the Avowed map will continue to improve. Many have been frustrated at the inability to add custom markers on the map, and that’s set to change once the Summer 2025 update goes live. As of now, there’s no release date, but it’s likely going to happen around July or August (given that we also have a Fall update coming up).
